Ричмонду, шт. Вирджиния. По настоянию президента Линкольна [ Lincoln, Abraham], который в течение года после первого сражения у ручья Бул-Ран [ Bull Run, First Battle of] требовал от своих командующих оттеснить конфедератов из долины р. Потомак [ Potomac River], чтобы расчистить путь к Ричмонду, в апреле 1862 110 тыс. северян под командованием генерала Дж. Макклеллана [ McClellan, George Brinton] выступили к полуострову между реками Йорк [York River] и Джеймс [ James River]. План Макклеллана заключался в массированном наступлении под прикрытием флота. В мае Макклеллану удалось взять г. Йорктаун. Тогда командующий южан Дж. Джонстон [ Johnston, Joseph Eggleston] передвинул свои войска на юг для обороны Ричмонда и выступил против северян с примерно равными силами. Готовясь к решающему сражению, Макклеллан ожидал подкрепления в 40 тыс. человек от генерала И. Макдауэлла [McDowell, Irvin], но его войска потерпели поражение в долине р. Шенандоа [ Shenandoah Valley]. 31 мая 1862 Джонстон атаковал силы Макклеллана у станции Фэр-Оукс [ Fair Oaks, Battle of], но уже 1 июня был вынужден отступить к Ричмонду. Президент Конфедерации Дж. Дэвис [ Davis, Jefferson] передал командование войсками Роберту Ли [ Lee, Robert Edward], которому после кровопролитных сражений 26 июня-2 июля 1862, вошедших в историю как Семидневная битва [ Seven Days' Battles], удалось остановить наступление северян (потери южан составили более 20 тыс. человек, а северян - около 16 тыс.). Макклеллан получил приказ прекратить наступление и вернулся на исходные позиции.
